How to Install a COB LED Strip Step by Step: Complete Guide with Materials and Mistakes to Avoid

Learning how to install a COB LED strip is not as difficult as it seems if you follow the right order. This step-by-step COB LED strip installation is designed for those who have never handled this type of cable before.

Thousands of people search every month for how to install a COB LED strip without an electrician, and it is entirely possible if you follow each step calmly. COB strips have very closely packed high-density chips. That is why their light is continuous, without the dots visible on other LED light strips. More and more people are choosing to install LED lighting at home without calling a professional.

Here is every step, from the first cut to the last cable.

What you need before you start: materials and tools

Anyone installing an LED strip for the first time will appreciate that the process is simpler than it looks.

Before buying anything, it is worth answering what you need to install a COB LED strip. The list is short, and almost everything can be ordered together with the strip in the same purchase.

Complete materials list for a correct COB installation

  • 24V COB LED strip, of the type and power you need.
  • Opal diffuser aluminium profile, which holds the strip and distributes the light.
  • 24V DC power supply, with sufficient power for the entire installation.
  • COB strip connector, to join sections without a soldering iron.
  • LED strip double-sided adhesive or thermal heat dissipation tape, depending on where it will be stuck.
  • Aluminium profile end caps, to close the ends.
  • CCT single-colour controller, if you want to change the light tone.

Necessary tools and which ones you can improvise

Many LED light strips are sold with the profile already included in the same package.

The tools for installing a COB LED strip are few, and most are already at home.

You need scissors or a craft knife, a tape measure, a pencil and something to tighten small screws on the connections. If you are going to cut the aluminium profile, a fine-toothed saw gives a cleaner cut than pliers.

Step 1 - Calculate the length and choose the right strip

Before cutting anything, measure the space where the strip will go and note down the exact metres.

Installing a COB LED strip in the kitchen, under cupboards, is one of the most sought-after installations. Equally common are searches along the lines of COB LED strip under-furniture installation, almost always for shelves or desks.

This figure determines the total power and the power supply you need, so it is worth measuring twice.

Power per metre and total installation power

Each COB strip indicates its power per metre in the technical sheet, normally between 10W and 20W per metre. To find the total, multiply that figure by the metres to be installed.

For example, a strip of 14W per metre and 5 metres in length requires 70W in total, not counting the safety margin.

How to calculate the power supply with a safety margin

Before buying, calculate which 24V DC power supply you need based on the total metres. The general rule is to add 20% more power on top of the previous calculation, so as not to strain the power supply or shorten its useful life.

A 24V DC power supply of the right size is what makes the installation last years without failures.

On long runs, voltage drop reduces brightness at the far end. It is therefore advisable to feed from both sides if the strip exceeds 5 metres.

Step 2 - Prepare the aluminium profile

The aluminium profile for COB LED strip serves two purposes: it holds the strip firmly in place and helps dissipate heat.

The aluminium profile is not an aesthetic indulgence, it extends the life of the entire installation.

How to cut the profile to size without special tools

Mark the exact measurement with a pencil on the profile. A metal saw or a craft knife with a new blade, going over the same point several times, cuts the aluminium without the need for special tools.

File the edges after cutting to avoid damaging the strip or cutting yourself when handling it.

Fixing the profile to the surface step by step

Clean the surface before fixing the profile. Dust and grease cause it to come loose over time.

You can fix it with screws or use its own adhesive tape, depending on the type of profile purchased.

Step 3 - Cut the COB LED strip at the correct point

Cutting a COB LED strip correctly is the step where beginners make the most mistakes. A cut in the wrong place can damage the circuit and leave that section without light.

Where the cut points are on a COB strip

Each cut point on the COB strip is marked with a line or printed scissors every few centimetres. You can only cut at those marks, never at an intermediate point.

How to make a clean cut without damaging the LEDs

Use sharp scissors and cut in a single movement, right through the centre of the mark.

An uneven cut, made by cutting several times in the same place, can shift the internal contacts and leave that area without light.

Step 4 - Stick the strip into the profile

Sticking the COB LED strip into the aluminium profile must be done on a clean, dry and dust-free surface. If you skip this step, the strip comes loose within a few months, especially with heat.

Factory adhesive vs thermal tape: when to use each one

The factory LED strip double-sided adhesive is sufficient for low-power strips in dry indoor environments.

For COB strips above 14W per metre, or near a heat source, thermal heat dissipation tape holds better. On high-power COB strips, heat sinks help prevent the light from losing intensity over time.

How to avoid air bubbles and peeling

Stick the strip little by little, pressing each section with your finger before moving on to the next.

If an air bubble appears, lift that piece and stick it down again. It is better to do it right now than to have to pull the entire strip off later.

Step 5 - Connect the power supply and the controller

In a domestic 24V COB LED strip installation, the electrical risk is much lower than working directly with 220V.

When connecting the strip to the power supply, always respect the positive and negative terminals. Before closing anything, check that the entire length lights up without any dark zones.

Polarity and correct connection on COB strips

A quality COB LED strip connector prevents sparks and poor contacts at the junction.

Look at the plus and minus symbols printed next to each end. Reversing them does not usually damage the strip, but prevents it from working correctly until corrected.

How to connect a CCT controller if you want a variable light tone

A controller for COB LED strip is placed between the power supply and the strip, never before the power supply.

With a CCT single-colour controller already connected, you can switch between warm light and cool light. This is done via a remote control or an app, depending on the model purchased.

Step 6 - Install the diffuser and close the profile

With the strip already stuck and connected, press the diffuser into the profile without forcing it.

The protection rating of the strip must match the location where it is installed. The IP classification always appears on the box or in the technical sheet. Choosing between IP20 and IP65 according to the environment depends on whether the installation is in a dry living room or outdoors, near water.

The higher the protection level, the better the strip resists moisture and dust, although it also tends to cost a little more.

Opal diffuser vs clear diffuser: the visual result

The opal diffuser spreads the light and conceals the LED dots, ideal if the strip is on show.

The clear diffuser lets more light through, but the diodes are visible individually. It is better for indirect installations, where the profile is hidden behind a piece of furniture or a moulding.

Most common mistakes when installing a COB LED strip

Every year more people decide to install LED strips themselves rather than calling a professional. Searches such as mistakes when installing a COB LED strip always highlight the same three errors.

Knowing them in advance avoids wasting time and money on parts that were not needed.

Underpowered power supply

Buying a power supply that is just enough, with no margin, is the most common mistake.

Over time the power supply overheats and may fail sooner than expected, leaving the strip without light.

Not using an aluminium profile

Sticking the strip onto wood or plasterboard, without an aluminium profile, greatly shortens its useful life.

Without that support, heat does not dissipate properly and the LEDs lose brightness ahead of time.

Cutting outside the marked point

Cutting between two marks, even by just a few millimetres, leaves that section without connection and that part of the strip does not light up.

If this happens, there is no possible repair; the badly cut piece must be discarded.

Frequently asked questions about COB LED strip installation

Can I install a COB LED strip without being an electrician?

Yes, as long as you work with 24V or 12V strips, which are low voltage and do not require an electrician. You only need to take extra care if the power supply is connected to the home's mains electricity.

What power supply do I need for 5 metres of COB strip at 12W/m?

For 5 metres at 12W per metre, the base power is 60W. Adding the recommended safety margin, it is advisable to choose a power supply of at least 72W.

Is it compulsory to use an aluminium profile with a COB LED strip?

It is not essential, but it is a good idea. Without a profile, the strip runs hotter and its useful life is shortened, especially in installations that are on for several hours a day.

Can I cut the COB LED strip to any length?

No, it can only be cut at the factory-marked points. Cutting outside those marks can damage the circuit and leave the rest of the strip without light.

What is the difference between sticking the strip with the factory adhesive or with thermal tape?

The factory adhesive is quicker and is sufficient for most indoor installations. Thermal tape withstands heat better and is recommended for higher-power strips or in warmer areas.

How do I know if my COB LED strip is correctly connected before closing the profile?

Before closing the profile, switch the strip on and check that the entire length gives off uniform light. If you see dark zones or flickering, check the polarity and connections before continuing.
