Aluminium Profiles for LED Strips: Recessed, Surface, Floor and Corner
Aluminium profiles for LED strips turn an adhesive strip into a finished line of light, because they house the strip, dissipate its heat and hide it behind a diffuser. The range includes surface-mounted, recessed and corner profiles for LED strips, all 2 metres long and cuttable to size.
Why you should always install the LED strip in an aluminium profile
A strip stuck directly onto wood or plaster works, but it runs hotter and every point of light is visible, which is why the profile is part of the LED lighting system just like the power supply.
Heat dissipation, mechanical protection and a professional finish
Aluminium heat dissipation is the first technical reason, as the profile acts as a heat sink and lowers the temperature of the LEDs, which is the factor that most shortens their service life. An aluminium LED strip profile with heat dissipation is decisive for high-density strips and for installations that stay on for many hours.
The rigid body protects the strip against knocks, dust and cleaning, while the side end caps of the aluminium profile close the ends with a clean finish. The silver anodised finish does not oxidise, and alongside the anodised aluminium LED profile there are lacquered versions in white and black.
Types of aluminium profiles for LED strips by mounting system
The mounting system determines the profile, and then you should check the profile width according to the strip in mm, because the LED strip width has to match the inner channel for the installation to work first time.
COB and SMD strip compatibility is the other point to check, since a COB and SMD compatible LED profile accepts both technologies as long as the inner channel has the right width.
Surface, recessed, walk-on floor and corner
The surface-mounted aluminium LED strip profile is fixed with clips or screws without any prior cavity, and for that reason it is the most common aluminium profile for kitchen furniture, under wall cabinets or on shelves.
The recessed false ceiling LED profile sits flush with the board, and the 2 m recessed aluminium profile with wings fits into a groove while the wings are covered with filler, making it the LED profile for recessing into plasterboard or plaster in continuous ceilings. An LED profile with wings for LED strips hides the body and leaves only the line of light visible.
The IP65 walk-on floor profile includes a thicker diffuser and is sealed to withstand foot traffic and cleaning with water, so an IP65 walk-on LED floor profile suits corridors, steps and covered terraces. The 45-degree corner profile rests in a 90º corner and directs the light towards the worktop, making it the 45-degree corner LED profile in the range.
On work tables the suspended LED profile is also used, hanging from cables and emitting light downwards, and if you are looking for a 2-metre Infinity Pro aluminium profile, the 2 m surface models cover the same use.
| Profile type | Mounting | Compatible strip | Installation depth |
| U-shaped surface | Clips or screws | COB and SMD | No cavity |
| Surface 17x7.8mm | Clips or adhesive | Narrow COB and SMD | No cavity |
| Recessed with wings | Groove in plasterboard | COB and SMD | Groove for the body, wings under filler |
| Recessed opal | Cavity in furniture | COB and SMD | Flush |
| 90º corner | Corner | COB and SMD | No cavity, light at 45º |
For long runs, the I-shaped reinforcement joint connects two profiles from the inside and achieves an extension with no visible cut point.
Opal or clear diffuser: how to choose
The opal polycarbonate diffuser spreads the brightness and hides the LEDs, while the clear one lets almost all the light through but shows the dots when the strip is SMD.
When opal adds more and when to choose clear
An aluminium profile with an opal diffuser is the right choice when the line remains visible, as in kitchen furniture or headboards, because the light loss is small and you get a continuous line effect.
LED strips allow both finishes, although the clear diffuser makes more sense when the strip stays hidden or maximum luminous flux is needed, for example in indirect cornice lighting. With a COB strip the difference is smaller, because this technology already emits a uniform line.
Complete the installation with the 24V DC COB and SMD LED strips and the LED strip accessories, such as end caps and connectors, parts designed to house and join each section. To compare the price of aluminium LED strip profiles, each product sheet shows the cost per section.
Frequently asked questions about aluminium profiles for LED strips
Is it mandatory to use an aluminium profile with an LED strip?
No regulation requires it, but strip manufacturers recommend it because without a profile the strip runs at a higher temperature and its service life decreases, especially in high-power strips.
Which profile do I need to recess into plasterboard or plaster?
You need a recessed profile with wings, for which a groove is opened in the board, the profile is inserted and the wings are covered with filler and paint, so that when finished only the line of light remains visible.
Can the floor profile withstand people walking on it?
Yes, as long as it is a walk-on floor profile, with a reinforced body and a thick polycarbonate diffuser that spreads the load, and for outdoor use or areas that are washed often, you should choose one with IP65 protection.
Does the opal diffuser greatly reduce the brightness of the strip?
It slightly reduces the flux, but in return the light comes out with no visible dots, and if you need more brightness it is better to increase the power of the strip rather than remove the diffuser.
What profile width do I need for my 10mm LED strip?
The inner channel of the profile must measure at least 10 mm, preferably with one or two millimetres of clearance, so that the strip sits flat and the adhesive grips across its whole surface, so check the inner width on the technical sheet.
Can the aluminium profile be cut to size?
Yes, all 2-metre profiles can be cut with a fine-tooth metal saw, and then the diffuser is cut to the same length, the edge is filed and the end caps are fitted.
